Books: Walks South Perthshire

Everyone will find something to attract them in the latest Hallewell pocket walking guide, Walks South Perthshire, a treasure trove of 22 graded walks ranging from short strolls to long hikes, weaving in and out of the county in question. An added incentive is that the guide's compiler is the FotO chairman, Alistair Lawson - through his strong involvement with the Scottish Rights of Way Society. Two Ochils crossings are included, Auchterarder to Dollar and Blackford to Tillicoultry - while shorter forays to the Frandy reservoirs and to Glensherup reservoir are also featured.

Clear route instructions, type of surface and recommended provisions for the walks are given, particularly for the A and A+ walks (full walking equipment), and it is made plain where navigational skills are needed.

From "lone Glen Artney's hazel shade" near where "the stag at eve had drunk its fill" in Scott's Lady of the Lake, to the Roman road and signal stations along the northern edge of Strathearn and the varied vistas offered by the Provost's Walk around the town of Auchterarder - there can be few more interesting locations within such a short compass than those contained within this pocket guide.

If you would like a copy of Walks South Perthshire, please send a cheque for £1.95 made payable to Friends of the Ochils to Alistair Lawson, Ochilbank, Muckhart, FK14 7JW. FotO funds will benefit to the tune of 65p from each sale, thanks to an arrangement made with the publishers.
