Friends of the Ochils Newsletter 15: September 1999

Situation vacant

Wanted: one secretary / meetings convenor / AGM organiser / committee man or woman / picker-up of otherwise unclaimed tasks

A crunch moment has arrived in FotO affairs in that our secretary, Peter Dilworth, has departed not just from Alva and the Ochils but from the United Kingdom. Peter's new commitments make it impossible for him to continue as secretary even by the wonders of technology, as he has relocated to the Eurasian border at the foot of the Urals. These are, as readers doubtless already know, somewhat higher peaks at the opposite edge of Europe.

Peter's move does not denote penal banishment to Siberia or any such bleak place; quite the reverse. His move is entirely voluntary, under the aegis of Voluntary Service Overseas. He will be in Russia for two years, in a town called Chelyabinsk, taking up a social work training post. Chelyabinsk is situated on the Trans-Siberian railway and Peter invites visitors from Scotland to drop off and visit should they happen to be passing.

Ever since the establishment of FotO, Peter has held the post of secretary and - to my knowledge - has not missed a single committee meeting. Clearly this has provided valuable continuity to our efforts and his departure, even if only for two years, constitutes a challenge to other members to take over his work. Please stop here and re-read that last sentence: it could be you.

We wish Peter bon voyage - can't do that in Russian I'm afraid. We look forward to future newsletters reporting details of a challenging experience which will provide comparative insights with regard to our own range of hills back here in central Scotland.
