Memories are made of these . . ‘We woke to unexpected snow on the low hills opposite. But the day was bright, and I set off up Dumyat. The biting north wind had dropped at last, and there was some warmth in the sun. For the first time this year, larks were everywhere, filling the skies with their singing. Near the top of the hill, I was suddenly surrounded by light, blowing mist. Or was it smoke? It looked more like smoke. Surely the shepherds would be too busy with heavily pregnant sheep to be burning heather? I walked to the edge of a crag, looked down. Startled rabbits below bolted for safety. And the whole hillside seemed to be gently smoking. But it was the warm sun, drying off the sodden slopes, and the water vapour condensing in the cold air, and being carried away by the breeze. The wind has turned, at last, to the south-west. Winter surrenders, at last, to spring.’ Nicki
