The dramatic aspect of the Ochils south face, along the foot of which are strung out the mill towns which sprang up around the manufactories powered by the rushing glen burns. The communities hug the edge of what was once a sea; now a plain, virtually at sea level.
Flooding is a fairly frequent hazard in the low-lying plain in winter, both the River Devon and River Forth struggling to drain the land because of the high water table. The present Hillfoots Road was opened in 1806, parallel to the Back Road (in places called Ochil Road), which originally linked the communities.
